The first Father’s Day was celebrated at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. Sonora Smart Dodd created it to honor her father, a Civil War veteran. He, as a single parent, had raised his six children. Initially, Sonora's idea was to take a day to honor the fathers or paternal figures in our lives. Over 111 years later, and Americans continue to celebrate their fathers every third Sunday in June. Father’s Day and Luv’s Brownies
It's been over 100 years since Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of Father's Day. I had a very special relationship with my father. He served in the Navy for 13 years and a Vietnam Veteran. He told me he always wanted a daughter. While serving in the military, he started the adoption process. From day the day he brought me home, he said he felt an instant connection.
Once he left the military, he got home and realized he couldn’t get a job. He started designing wedding gowns simultaneously attending cosmetology school. He purchased our first home with money he earned from his custom gowns. He was tenacious and filled with “grit”. Although he is no longer with us, I feel his presence every day.
